Stage 2
This stage is for Year 3 and Year 4 students. Students in this stage should be familiar with regular library procedures and are actively involved in the borrowing and returning of books, including using the enquiry terminals to search independently for their own books. Students are regularly shown new additions to the collection and feedback is welcome, both for current and future titles.
Year 3 and 4 students are able to borrow up to 4 books, from any section of the library. If necessary, the teacher-librarian assists in this choice. Students are encouraged to borrow at their own reading level and not choose books that are too easy or difficult for them. They are also reminded of time constraints - the borrowing of 4 lengthy novels will not be allowed, for example. As a general rule, it is expected that students will read their choices independently at home. Students can change their books every week and may renew their books if they need more time. A library bag is required for this purpose. If a student has exceeded their maximum borrowing limit, has severely overdue books, or has not brought a library bag, they will not be able to borrow.
Students bring their laptops to the library and work on a cumulative library project every term. This project is information-skills based and is linked to the COGS unit of study within the classroom. The completed project is marked by the teacher-librarian according to a specific rubric, with the results then given to the classroom teacher.
