Stage 1
This stage is for Year 1 and Year 2 students. Students in this stage should be familiar with regular library procedures, but are given weekly opportunities to demonstrate and review their skills, becoming actively involved in the borrowing and returning of books. Every time that the students visit the library, they will be read to. They will also view stories via the interactive whiteboard when appropriate.
Year 1 and Year 2 students are able to borrow up to 2 books and choose these books from specific sections in the library. The teacher-librarian assists in this choice, always aiming to ensure that the books chosen are at an appropriate level. As a general rule, it is expected these books will be shared with the student at home, with independent reading encouraged as the student gains in confidence. Students can change their books every week. A library bag is required for this purpose. If a student has exceeded their maximum borrowing limit, has severely overdue books, or has not brought a library bag, they will not be able to borrow.
Students will also complete a literacy activity in the library. This is based around a particular book, which is linked to the COGS unit of study within the classroom. The completed worksheets are kept in a library folder and sent home periodically.
