What are we going to learn?
In this unit, you are going to examine a number of artistic symbols and the way they are used in society. You are going to look at the works of various artists and discuss what meaning you think the artist is trying to convey. You are going to look at dreamcatchers and will be able to both sketch and create your own. Finally, you are going to examine famous logos in society and create a logo to represent yourself. It should be a fun and creative unit! But first, let's look at a couple of key words.

The Lessons
1. Examine the artwork "The Twittering Machine" and discuss: what do you think the machine does, how would it move/sound, what words would you use to describe the machine?
2. Look at a selection of artworks by Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall, Yves TAnguy and Jean Tinguely and discuss how the artists have used symbols to create an imaginary, dreamlike or unreal feel.
3. After reading the history of the dreamcatcher, look at a variety of different dreamcatchers. What are the similarities and differences between them?
4. Create a set of design criteria for making a dreamcatcher, including: size, colour, materials used, how to represent self.
5. Sketch and then make a dreamcatcher.
6. Complete an artist's statement for the process.
7. Examine a variety of logos, select the most recognisable/effective and discuss reasons for the choice.
8. Create a personal logo and explain reasons for the design chosen.

Your Assessment
You will be creating a Keynote document throughout the unit and adding a new slide for each new lesson. At the end of the unit, you will be given a mark out of 100, based on content, effort and presentation.
