What are we going to learn?
This unit is called Local Places. We are going to read, listen to and watch lots of stories about different places and how important they are. We are going to talk about what makes these places special. We are also going to talk about ways we can help to look after the place where we live.
Check these out!
Here are some links to stories that you can watch online on YouTube.
Where the Forest Meets the Sea - this is a clip of a student reading Jennie Baker's story. (The voice is a bit soft, so listen carefully!)
Little Flying Fox - this story is told by Aboriginal storyteller, Pauline McLeod.
My Land - in this clip, you can hear Aunty Beryl Carmichael read her poem. She also shares her feelings about the land in an interview.

The Lessons
** You will need the worksheets to complete each activity. **
1. In "Where the Forest Meets the Sea", there is a line that says, 'I follow a creek into the rainforest.' Listen to some rainforest sounds and imagine that you are doing that too. Draw and describe what you see there.
2. What words are missing from this piece of writing from the "Lester & Clyde" story? Fill in the blanks, then draw your favourite part of the story.
3. After watching Pauline McLeod tell the story, fill in the voice balloon to show something that the Little Flying Fox said. According to the story, why do all flying foxes hang upside down today?
4. Look at the last page of "Paddy's Island." Match the numbers 1-5 with the correct picture and the correct word in the Wadi Wadi language. Then draw what you think the island looks like.
5. Listen to Aunty Beryl read her poem, "My Land". Draw pictures to match each part of the poem.
6. After listening to "Gami's Place", complete the table with words to match both Gami's Place and Gawa's Place. Then draw your own favourite place.
7. After listening to "Ten Little Jarjum", match the right doing word (verb) with the right sentence. Then finish the drawing of the turtle.
